Nag Ashwin’s latest comment on Kalki 2898 AD Part 2 has created more questions than answers.
Asked about fresh additions to the already huge cast, the director said, “No new additions. We are continuing with the story we started, and there are already so many characters in it.”
The interesting word here is “characters.” While the media has largely interpreted his statement as meaning there will be no new actors, Ashwin did not actually use the word “actors.” Could this difference be important?
Deepika Padukone, who played Sumathi, will not be part of the sequel. Her character is central to the story because she carries the unborn Kalki.
After Deepika’s official exit, there were reports that Sai Pallavi could be considered for the role, but there has been no official confirmation that she is replacing Deepika.
So, what if Ashwin is carefully choosing his word ‘character’ but not ‘actors’?
well, there is another way of looking at it. Kalki 2 could continue Sumathi’s story without showing her face clearly; perhaps through an actress seen from behind, in shadows, or through carefully designed shots; like how they took the route with showing Lord Krishna in Kalki Part 1.
In that case, there may be no “new visible actor,” while the media interpretation also appear true.
For now, Ashwin’s wording leaves plenty of room for speculation.
