Mumbai: Munmun Dutta, popularly known as Babita Ji from the television show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, has built her identity through years of hard work. Today, she is counted among the well-known faces of Indian television, but her journey did not begin directly in front of the camera. Music and stage performances were a part of her life from an early age. As a child, she used to sing at stage programmes, and it was during this period that she earned her first-ever income. Munmun was just seven years old at the time, and her first earning was only Rs 125. She herself had recalled this childhood anecdote. Munmun Dutta was born on September 28, 1987, in Durgapur, West Bengal. Her family had a connection with music, so she grew up in an environment surrounded by singing and the arts. As a child, Munmun began singing at school and local events. She later shared childhood photographs and revealed that she had also performed as a child singer in programmes for All India Radio and Doordarshan in Kolkata. Munmun had said that her first earning was just Rs 125. She was around seven years old when she earned the money by singing for All India Radio. Receiving payment for her hard work at such a young age was a special experience for her. She gave her first earnings to her mother. At that time, she probably could not have imagined that she would one day become such a well-known television personality. Along with pursuing music during her childhood, Munmun continued her studies. She later moved to Pune for higher education. During this period, her interest shifted towards modelling and fashion shows. She participated in fashion events and began travelling to Mumbai in search of work. In an interview, she recalled her early days in Mumbai and said that she did not have much money while looking for work and had to go through considerable struggle. Munmun’s acting career began in 2004 when she got an opportunity to work in the Zee TV show Hum Sab Baraati. She was in college at the time and later described it as her first acting experience. Although she did not have much understanding of acting then, the show gave her an opportunity to work in front of the camera. She subsequently appeared in modelling assignments and advertisements as well. In films, Munmun worked in Kamal Haasan’s Mumbai Xpress. She later appeared in Holiday as well. However, films did not bring her the recognition she eventually achieved on television. A major turning point in her life came in 2008 when she was cast as Babita Krishnan Iyer in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Munmun was around 20 years old at the time. The character of Babita brought Munmun recognition in households across the country. Her glamorous appearance on the show and her comic chemistry with Jethalal became popular with viewers. Over time, Babita Ji became one of the recognisable characters of the show. Apart from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Munmun has also appeared on television programmes such as Indian Idol, Kaun Banega Crorepati and Bigg Boss. She has also remained active on social media for several years, regularly sharing glimpses of her life with her fans. Munmun has received several awards and nominations during her career. In 2018, she won the Favourite TV Character award at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards for Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. In 2021, she received the Popular Supporting Actress award at the Indian Television Academy Awards.
