Suzuki Working on New Turbo-Petrol Engine for India: Everything We Know So Far

Suzuki is working on a new direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine that could be used in a number of its upcoming models in key markets including India. The move underscores the company’s plan to continue developing internal-combustion powertrains even as it expands its focus on hybrid, electric and other alternative-energy technologies.

The new engine, which internally goes by the name DITC, was launched as part of   Technology Strategy 2026. The company hasn’t revealed details on its displacement, power and torque figures or when the engine could enter production. The Japanese automaker, however, has outlined its main target for the new powertrain, looking to improve both performance and fuel economy.

Focus on Performance and Efficiency

According to Suzuki, the development of the DITC engine is expected to provide a compromise between enhanced performance and fuel economy. Instead of relying solely on the process of boosting power with the use of a turbocharger, the manufacturer will be seeking to develop better fuel economy along with enhanced performance.

The introduction of such a powertrain should enable Suzuki to address the needs of its customers while meeting the ever-increasing regulatory standards concerning emissions and fuel economy. In the case of India, the use of such technologies could be adapted for use in a number of Maruti Suzuki products in the hatchback and mid-size SUV segments.

The combination of turbocharging and direct fuel injection will be able to provide for the production of greater torque without increasing the volume of the engine. The process of direct fuel injection makes it possible to achieve better control over fuel delivery into the cylinder.

Suzuki Targets Higher Engine Efficiency

However, it should be noted that the development of power train in the company is not restricted by the invention of DITC engines only. Suzuki works on raising the level of thermal efficiency of its internal combustion engines.

Indeed, thermal efficiency indicates the proportion of energy which can be converted from fuel in the form of mechanical energy instead of dissipating as heat. According to the information provided by the company, the development of Z12E engine has resulted in achieving about 40 percent thermal efficiency level.
