The Dutch driver was forced to exhaust the last of his season’s allocated power unit components in Baku, triggering the penalty that looms over the final races.
Despite the setback, Verstappen delivered an impressive recovery drive on Saturday, securing second place behind and narrowly missing out on his first victory of the year. While the replacement engine parts used in Baku did not incur an immediate penalty due to being within his allotted quota, Verstappen acknowledged that his current power unit will not last through the remaining seven to eight races of the campaign.
Discussing the issue prior to the official engine swap decision made on Friday evening, Verstappen expressed his frustration over a promising weekend marred by mechanical problems. “Throughout qualifying, already from Q1, I had a problem with the engine,” he disclosed. “I was losing at least half a second compared to my teammate. And it only got worse.”
He continued, “In Q2 and Q3 it was a complete disaster, so I think we clearly have a problem with the engine. In Q1, we immediately saw a problem. Of course, at that point you still think, ‘What could it be? Is the engine too cold or actually too hot?’ All of that is possible, because it is all very sensitive nowadays. But later it became clear that we really did have a problem with the ICE. It only got worse and in Q3 that engine was no longer working properly at all.”
When questioned about the certainty of a grid penalty later this season, Verstappen confirmed, “Yeah, there definitely has to be a penalty at some point.”
