India secured a significant victory in the open section and a draw in the women’s section during round 10 of the 46th Chess Olympiad held in Samarkand on September 27.
In the open category, India defeated Uzbekistan 2 with a convincing score of 3.5-0.5. The wins came from Nihal Sarin, world champion D Gukesh, and R Praggnanandhaa.
In the women’s section, India drew 2-2 against China, with a crucial win from Savitha Shri helping to secure the result.
Following round 10, India stands second in the open category with 17 points, trailing Uzbekistan which leads with 18 points. In the women’s standings, India is third with 16 points, behind China with 18 points and Kazakhstan with 17 points, according to Chess.com.
The final round of the tournament is scheduled for today. The Chess Olympiad, regarded as the most prestigious team competition in chess, features the world’s top players competing in Samarkand from September 15 to 27.
India are the defending champions in both the open and women’s categories and are among the favourites to retain their titles.
