Meesaya Murukku 2 is a spiritual follow-up to Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi’s 2017 film. The new film is set in North Chennai and revolves around three generations of musicians. Their lives are closely connected to Gaana and its changing identity. The story also follows a young artist who wants to take the genre beyond its traditional space.
The film takes a youthful approach in the first half. Friendship, romance, comedy and music drive most of the proceedings. Aadhi keeps the treatment light and accessible, which should work well with the Gen Z audience. The North Chennai setting also gives the film a distinct flavor. However, the screenplay takes some time to find its direction. The main conflict becomes clear only after the film has spent considerable time establishing its characters.
The three-generation idea gives the film more depth as it moves forward. Karunas is one of the highlights as Das, while Baba Bhaskar is effective as Shiva. Aadhi handles the different character stages with ease and carries the film with his familiar energy. Harshath Khan, Sha-Ra and Yogi Babu provide good support. Ramya Ranganathan is particularly impressive and gets a strong role. Chaithra also makes an impact in her limited appearance. Ketika Sharma is mainly used for the romantic and lighter portions.
The film also touches upon the politics of the music industry. It looks at the difficulties faced by independent artists without strong backing. The discussion around nepotism is another important part of the story. The film initially takes a strong stand against it. However, it later presents a more balanced view. Supporting your own children is natural, but that should not come at the cost of blocking opportunities for others.
The second half works better because of its emotional focus. The story moves towards family relationships and the bond between fathers and sons. The three generations also begin to connect more naturally with the central theme. Some of these portions follow familiar patterns. Still, the performances and music give them enough impact. The final stretch brings the emotional and motivational elements together effectively.
The music is one of the film’s biggest strengths. Aadhi’s songs suit the youthful mood and add energy to the proceedings. They also work well in the theatre. The cinematography captures the colorful North Chennai setting nicely. The editing keeps the film moving through its energetic portions. However, the screenplay remains inconsistent in places. Some conflicts are not developed strongly enough, while a few supporting characters deserved better writing.
Meesaya Murukku 2 does not have the same freshness or mass appeal as the first film. Yet, it has its own identity through its Gaana backdrop, music and three-generation story. Aadhi’s performance, Ramya Ranganathan’s role and the emotional portions in the second half work well. The uneven screenplay and familiar writing prevent it from becoming a more satisfying experience. Still, Meesaya Murukku 2 remains a decent and watchable musical entertainer.
