Indian sprinters Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur were eliminated from the men’s 100 metres at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on Friday after finishing fifth and seventh in their respective semifinal heats.
Gurindervir completed Heat 2 with a time of 10.32 seconds, placing fifth behind Oman’s Al Balushi Ali who led with 10.01 seconds. China’s Xie Zhenye and South Korea’s Biwesa Daniel finished second and third with times of 10.18 seconds and 10.22 seconds, respectively.
In Heat 3, Animesh Kujur finished seventh with a time of 10.38 seconds. South Korea’s Nwamadi Joeljin topped the heat in 10.17 seconds, followed by Malaysia’s Mohd Muhammad in 10.25 seconds and Japan’s Koike Yuki in 10.31 seconds.
Meanwhile, Gulveer Singh secured a silver medal in the men’s 10,000 metres event, clocking 28:29.38 to finish second.
Earlier in the day, Manpreet Kaur earned the bronze medal in the women’s shot put with a best throw of 17.17 metres on her fourth attempt.
India’s medal tally increased on Day 6 of the Asian Games with shooters Kamaljeet and Suruchi Inder Singh winning gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Rudrankksh Patil, and Niraj Kumar claimed silver in the men’s 50m rifle three positions team event.
In table tennis, Manush Shah and Diya Chitale secured bronze in mixed doubles after reaching the semi-finals, where they were defeated by China’s Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha.
India’s squash mixed doubles pair, Joshana Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar, progressed to the semi-finals ensuring a medal, while Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh advanced to the singles semi-finals.
The Indian men’s and women’s kabaddi teams qualified for the finals after victories over Thailand and Nepal in their semi-final matches.
In hockey, the Indian women’s team defeated Japan 3-1 in their Pool B match.
Swimmer Rishabh Das finished sixth in the men’s 200m backstroke final. Weightlifter Seram Nirupama Devi placed seventh in the women’s 61kg category.
Boxer Preeti’s campaign ended in the round of 16 following a 0-5 loss to North Korea’s Pang Chol Mi.
India’s overall medal count stands at 21, comprising two gold, nine silver, and 11 bronze medals, placing the country 12th on the medals table.
