England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler made history at Leeds by becoming the first England player to surpass 10,000 runs across both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) combined.
During the second ODI against Sri Lanka, Buttler contributed significantly in a chase of 322 runs before retiring hurt due to injury. He scored a powerful 69 runs off 49 balls, including five fours and five sixes, with a strike rate of 140.82.
In 204 ODI matches and 176 innings, Buttler has accumulated 5,678 runs at an average of 39.15 and a strike rate of 115.54, including 11 centuries and 30 half-centuries, with a highest score of 162 not out. He ranks as England’s third-highest run-scorer in ODIs.
In T20Is, where he is England’s leading run-scorer, Buttler has made 4,384 runs in 163 matches and 150 innings, averaging 34.79 with a strike rate of 150.13. His tally includes two centuries and 30 half-centuries.
Across 367 limited-overs matches and 326 innings, Buttler has scored a combined total of 10,062 runs at an average of 37.12, featuring 13 centuries and 60 half-centuries.
Including his Test career where he has scored 2,907 runs in 57 matches with two centuries and 18 half-centuries, Buttler’s overall international tally stands at 12,969 runs in 424 matches and 426 innings. He has maintained an average of 35.82 and a strike rate of 98.25 in all formats, with 15 centuries and 78 half-centuries.
The second ODI was won by Sri Lanka by 16 runs in a high-scoring contest, levelling the three-match series at 1-1. Sri Lanka batted first after winning the toss. Pathum Nissanka scored 25 runs off 33 balls, while Kamindu Mendis contributed 54 runs from 65 balls, including four boundaries and three sixes. A 137-run partnership for the second wicket between Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis was instrumental; Kusal made 121 runs in 100 balls with 14 fours and three sixes. He scored his seventh ODI century and passed 5,000 ODI runs in his 158th match.
Pavan Rathnayake (48 runs in 39 balls) and Janith Liyanage (32 runs in 26 balls) also made valuable contributions as Sri Lanka reached 321 for six in their 50 overs. For England, Gus Atkinson and Rehan Ahmed took two wickets each, while Jofra Archer claimed one.
England’s innings began strongly with openers Tom Banton and Ben Duckett putting on a 143-run stand, scoring 73 runs off 62 balls and 67 runs off 63 balls respectively. The team slipped to 157 for three before Joe Root and Buttler added 46 runs to pass 200. Buttler and Will Jacks (52 runs off 61 balls) kept England competitive, but effective death-over bowling from Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka, Eshan Malinga, and Dunith Wellalage, who took three wickets for 49 runs, restricted England to 305 for nine in 50 overs.
