Veteran Bengali actress Mithu Mukherjee dies after battling prolonged illness. The renowned personality was 71 years old and breathed her last on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the private hospital, Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. She was reportedly battling cancer for a year.
Mithu Mukherjee comes from an established film family; she was the niece of the legendary mythological film actress Anita Guha.

The veteran actress was born in 1955 in Kolkata. The screen icon entered the film industry at 17 with Chitta Bose’s Shesh Parba opposite Shamit Bhanja. Ruling the silver screen from the 1970s to the 1990s, the actress rose to fame prominently through Dinen Gupta’s Marjina Abdulla opposite Debraj Roy.
Mithu worked not only in Bengali films but also in Hindi films. She appeared in hits like Nishi Kanya, Mouchak, Kabi, Prarthana, and many others, opposite renowned heroes of her time, including Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chattopadhyay, Ranjit Mullick, and others. Some of her Hindi films include Khaan Dost, Safed Jhoot, Dillagi, Do Ladke Dono Ladke, etc.
She was popularly known as the Rekha of Kolkata. Later in the 1980s, after Dujane, the actress took a long break. She marked her comeback in 1990 with Ashrita, marking her final appearance before she permanently walked away from the spotlight.
After 1990, Mithu kept her life mostly private and shifted to Mumbai long ago. Reports say that the actress even sold her Kolkata house and settled permanently in the city of dreams.
