Smriti Irani Speaks Out Against Online Trolling, Urges Kindness and Responsibility

In a recent video posted on Instagram, actress Smriti Irani addressed the growing culture of online trolling. Accompanied by her co-star, Irani highlighted how social media has empowered many individuals who previously felt voiceless.

She stated, “Social media has democratized the right to be heard. It has given a voice to millions who may never have had one. However, some individuals have begun to interpret this freedom as a license to harm, insult, and dehumanize others.”

Irani pointed out that public figures are often told that enduring criticism is part of the territory. “But should it be this way? Why should entering public life mean forfeiting the right to respect? Why should anyone be expected to silently endure humiliation just because the perpetrator hides behind anonymity or is bold enough to use their real name? ‘My handle, my opinion’ should not be an excuse for cruelty.”

Emphasizing the importance of free speech, she remarked, “The right to speak is incredibly valuable, and so is the responsibility that comes with it. Disagree, debate, critique, and hold public figures accountable. But let us never forget that there is a human being on the other side of the screen.”

Concluding her message, Irani reminded her followers, “Typing words takes only seconds, but their impact can last a lifetime. Be kind. It doesn’t require much effort, but it can mean more than you think.”

This statement from Irani follows a recent incident involving Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, who expressed his frustration over trolling during a weekend episode of a popular show, where he and other celebrities faced body, age, and appearance shaming.
