Filmmaker Atlee has recalled the role Thalapathy Vijay played at important stages of his career, including the period when he was preparing to make Jawan with Shah Rukh Khan. Speaking at the audio launch of Vijay Sethupathi’s upcoming film Baththa in Chennai, Atlee expressed his gratitude towards Vijay and remembered the actor’s reaction when Shah Rukh visited his office for discussions about the project.
Atlee Credits Vijay for His Journey
Atlee said that his professional achievements are the result of his own hard work, but he also considers Vijay’s encouragement an important part of his journey. Recalling his early years in the industry, the filmmaker said he remains grateful to his parents, wife and God for the success that followed his second directorial venture, Raja Rani, released in 2013.
He also highlighted his professional association with Vijay, with the two working together on three films: Theri in 2016, Mersal in 2017 and Bigil in 2019. The collaboration became an important phase in Atlee’s career and established a long-running creative relationship between the actor and director.
Vijay Encouraged Him to Make Jawan
Atlee also remembered the period when Shah Rukh Khan visited his office to discuss Jawan. According to the filmmaker, Vijay encouraged him to focus on the project instead of worrying about whether he could manage such a large production.
Atlee recalled Vijay telling him to stop following him around and go ahead with the Shah Rukh Khan film, describing the project as something that could change his career. Atlee said the experience ultimately had a major impact on his professional life and reiterated his gratitude towards Vijay.
Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, went on to become a major commercial success after its theatrical release in 2023. The film marked Atlee’s Hindi directorial debut and brought his work to a much wider audience.
‘He Will Always Be My Brother’
While discussing Vijay, Atlee clarified that his repeated references to the actor should not necessarily be interpreted as an indication of an upcoming collaboration. He said Vijay’s transition into politics has changed the circumstances, but their personal bond remains important to him.
Atlee referred to Vijay as his “brother” and said that relationship would continue regardless of whether they work together professionally again. His comments came as Vijay’s political career has become another major part of his public profile.
Atlee Discusses Vijay’s Political Journey
Atlee also spoke about Vijay’s entry into politics and his role as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, according to the supplied interview report. He said Vijay’s political journey could help create a foundation for younger generations to take an interest in public affairs.
The filmmaker contrasted his own generation’s exposure to legislative proceedings with what he described as growing awareness among younger people today. His remarks reflected his personal appreciation for Vijay’s public journey rather than offering a detailed assessment of his political work.
What’s Next for Atlee?
After Jawan, Atlee is working on his next major project, reportedly titled Raka. The film is expected to feature Allu Arjun, Deepika Padukone, Rashmika Mandanna and Janhvi Kapoor.
The project has attracted attention because of its ensemble cast and Atlee’s follow-up to Jawan. While audiences continue to await more details about the film, the director’s latest comments have once again highlighted the connection between his career and his long association with Vijay.
