The police investigation into England fast bowler Brydon Carse has been closed, but the controversy is not over for the 31-year-old pacer.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is continuing to look into the incident and could still take disciplinary action against Carse.
Carse has already been left out of the England squad, while head coach Brendon McCullum has made it clear that the fast bowler must address the issues surrounding the incident before he can think about returning to international cricket.
Police Investigation into Brydon Carse closed
Carse was accused of assaulting a man outside a nightclub in Derby on August 23. Police were called to the scene, and the England fast bowler was reportedly detained and taken away in handcuffs.
He was later released, while the alleged victim decided not to make a formal complaint. With no complaint being pursued, the police investigation has now been closed. However, that does not mean the matter has ended for Carse.
ECB could still take action against Carse
The ECB investigation into Brydon Carse remains ongoing. Carse was removed from England’s squad for the remainder of the Test series against Pakistan after footage of the incident emerged.
He has also been left out of England’s squads for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka. The ECB has indicated that Carse needs to deal with the issues surrounding the Derby incident before returning to the England setup.
McCullum sends clear message to Brydon Carse
England head coach Brendon McCullum has also spoken about the situation involving Carse. McCullum has made it clear that the fast bowler needs to ‘get his life in order’ before he can seriously consider an England comeback.
England Test captain Joe Root has also expressed his disappointment over Carse’s behaviour. The message from the England camp is therefore clear – Carse’s return will depend not only on his performances on the cricket field but also on how he handles the situation away from it.
Carse still has time to rebuild his England career
Carse’s central contract with the ECB runs until September 30, 2027, meaning he still has time to work his way back into the England team.
The ECB has reportedly made it clear that a disciplined approach could eventually open the door for his return. In its statement, the board said Carse needs to work through the issues connected to the Derby incident and take the necessary time to make a fresh start.
Could Brydon Carse face a long-term setback?
The incident has inevitably drawn comparisons with previous off-field controversies involving England players. However, there is no indication at present that Carse’s England career is coming to an end.
His age, contract situation and previous performances could give him an opportunity to rebuild his position within the team, provided he satisfies the ECB’s requirements.
For now, though, Carse remains outside England’s plans, with the ECB investigation still hanging over his international future.
