Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon has recalled a memorable incident from the sets of the cult comedy ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ that helped her break the ice with co-star Karisma Kapoor.
Raveena recently appeared as a special guest on the dance reality show ‘India’s Best Dancer’ Season 5, where she and Karisma opened up about their experiences while shooting the iconic film, including their on-set camaraderie, laughter and the bond they developed through their shared love for cinema.
During the episode, host Harssh Limbachiyaa asked the actresses whether they used to laugh while shooting the film.
Raveena said they were “always laughing” during the shoot, recalling a scene involving a kidnapper’s phone call in which Aamir Khan is speaking on the phone while she could be seen laughing on the side.
She also spoke about the equation shared by Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karisma and herself, saying there were times when the four actors were not even speaking to one another despite working together. According to Raveena, their mutual respect for filmmaking and love for art eventually helped them put their differences aside and work together as a team.
She then recalled an incident that helped her and Karisma become more comfortable with each other.
Raveena said they had a sequence in which they were tied back-to-back to a pillar throughout a night shoot, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. During a dinner break, the male members of the cast and crew decided to play a prank on the two actresses, leaving them tied up while everyone else moved away from the floor.
“We had a scene where we were tied to a pillar, back to back, the whole night from 9 PM to 5 AM. So it was dinner break, we were tied up, it was night time and we were tired,” Raveena recalled.
She said the prank left the two actresses alone on the floor, repeatedly asking to be untied.
With the awkward silence continuing, Raveena finally turned to Karisma and asked, “Juice piyegi? You want juice?”
Karisma replied that she was hungry and wanted some juice. The simple exchange eventually got the two talking and helped break the ice between them.
Karisma also reminisced about shooting the song ‘Ye Raat Aur Ye Doori’, which was filmed at Mehboob Studio and was among the early sequences featuring all four lead actors together.
She recalled that Aamir, Salman, Raveena and she were all relatively new to the industry at the time and were nervous about working with director Rajkumar Santoshi.
“All 4 of us were quite new in the industry, and we were all so nervous at that time, shooting with Raj ji. It was so much fun to do that comedy song, but a song like this is tough, it’s not easy,” Karisma said.
She explained that the song required the actors to maintain its pace and energy while simultaneously executing the comedy and maintaining the flow of the sequence.
“Everybody was so busy working, but we enjoyed it a lot. Look at the timing of all the comedy scenes, it was amazing. I think ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ was always a great learning experience,” she added.
‘India’s Best Dancer’ Season 5 is available on Sony Entertainment Television and Sony LIV.
