Takaaki Nakagami Steps in for Joan Mir at Austrian MotoGP Amid Unresolved Health Concerns
Joan Mir will be absent from this weekend’s Austrian at the Red Bull Ring, with Honda’s official test rider Takaaki Nakagami stepping in as his replacement.
The 2020 World Champion has been battling an unspecified illness that severely drained his energy during last weekend’s Misano forcing him to withdraw from competition.
Following the race, Mir immediately traveled to Barcelona for medical examinations, but no conclusive diagnosis has been reached so far. With further testing scheduled, Mir will take time to rest, sidelining him for the Austrian round. This unexpected development opens the door for Nakagami’s return to the premier class after a recent private test on an 850cc prototype at Mugello.
Nakagami acknowledged the challenge of transitioning back to the full 1,000cc RC213V and Michelin tyres at the Red Bull Ring. “I arrive in Austria straight from a private test in Mugello, but we have been doing a lot of different testing of a lot of different bikes,” he said ahead of the race weekend. “This weekend will be about getting back up to speed completely with the RC213V and the Michelin tyres ahead of my wildcard at home in Motegi.”
The Japanese rider also revealed that the weekend could serve as an experimental opportunity. “Of course, I am sure that we will take this opportunity to try a couple of things that maybe the team wouldn’t normally so we can be well prepared for the future,” Nakagami explained. He emphasized the priority remains Mir’s health: “The main thing is to make sure that Joan [Mir] is okay, this is the key point in this difficult moment for him.”
Nakagami’s return to competition marks his first race appearance of the 2026 season. Beyond filling in for Mir, this outing acts as crucial preparation ahead of his planned wildcard entry at the Japanese GP in Motegi from October 2 to 4, aligning with the start of the flyaway segment of the calendar.
The sudden substitution underscores the unpredictable nature of the season and places Nakagami in the spotlight as he aims to demonstrate readiness and adaptability on Honda’s factory machinery. Meanwhile, Mir’s health status remains under close monitoring as the progresses.
