James Rodriguez has retired from international football, ending a 15-year run as Colombia’s record cap holder after 131 appearances, 31 goals and 43 assists.
The 35-year-old made the call on Tuesday in a video posted to his social channels, days after signing for Atletico Nacional. His last game in yellow came on 7 July, when he started Colombia’s 2026 World Cup last-16 tie with Switzerland. The match finished 0-0, and Switzerland won 4-3 on penalties.

James Rodriguez did not dress the moment up. “Today, I want to talk to you from the heart,” he posted. “After many years, many games and joys, and difficult moments, it’s time to close one of the most important chapters in my life: my journey with the Colombian national team.”
The caption that travelled with the video was just as plain. “Thank you for every match, every joy, every tear and every dream we shared. Defending the colours of the Colombia national team was one of the greatest honours of my life,” he said.
He went further in the clip itself. “Wearing this shirt was a dream, but also a huge responsibility,” James added. “Every time I entered a court, I understood that he didn’t play just for me. I played for my family, teammates, thousands of Colombians who dreamed of all of us.
“I had the honor of wearing the No. 10 shirt and also the captain’s armband. I always tried to do it with respect, responsibility and understanding what it meant to represent Colombia. I had good days and very difficult ones, but I never stopped feeling proud of these colors.”
From a debut winner against Bolivia to the 2014 Golden Boot
James Rodriguez first wore the shirt in October 2011 against Bolivia and scored the winner. He played three World Cups, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and the 2026 finals across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Colombia did not qualify for Qatar 2022.
Brazil 2014 remains the peak. He scored six goals in five games, won the Golden Boot, and produced the volley against Uruguay in the last 16 that later won FIFA’s Puskas Award. That tournament took him from Monaco to Real Madrid. Colombia reached the quarter-finals before falling to the hosts.
He is tied with Carlos Valderrama and Freddy Rincon for the most tournament appearances by a Colombian. In 2024, he captained the side to a Copa America final, a 1-0 extra-time loss to Argentina and Colombia’s first title-match appearance in 23 years. He never won a senior trophy with the Cafeteros.
Captain through a 2026 last-16 exit
Rodriguez started every match at the 2026 World Cup and wore the armband throughout. Colombia topped a group that included Portugal, then ran into Switzerland in Vancouver. He played 65 minutes of the goalless draw. That night he also passed David Ospina to become the country’s all-time appearance leader. It was his last outing in the shirt.
Club career goes on in Medellin
The international chapter is closed. The club chapter is not. Last week he joined Atletico Nacional on a deal through next June after leaving Minnesota United, returning to Colombian football for the first time since his teenage years at Envigado. Nacional is the 14th club of a career that also included Real Madrid, two Champions League titles and two LaLiga crowns plus spells at Bayern Munich and Everton.
“I’m leaving calmly because I gave everything. Thank you for every moment, thank you, Colombia,” he said.
For a generation of Colombian fans, the No. 10 and the captain’s armband were the same person. That era is over. The next one starts without him.
