Maruti Suzuki has crossed a major export milestone with shipments of the India-made Jimny 5-door, and e Vitara crossing the 1 lakh-unit mark to Japan. The move underscores the increasing importance of India as a manufacturing base for Suzuki, especially for one of the world’s most competitive automotive markets.
Fronx was the first of the three cars to reach Japan, and the exports were initiated in August 2024. Jimny 5-door followed Fronx by being exported from December 2024, whereas the exports of the e Vitara were started in September 2025. Both the Jimny 5-door and e Vitara are manufactured only in India, indicating the increasing contribution of India in the manufacturing policy of Suzuki.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said, ” The export milestone also symbolises the remarkable evolution of the India-Japan partnership. What began as Suzuki’s vision to manufacture automobiles in India has come full circle, with Made-in-India vehicles finding strong acceptance among Japanese customers. This success has helped Japan emerge as the second-biggest market for Maruti Suzuki exports.”
Japan was the second largest export destination of Maruti Suzuki in FY2025-26 and continued the same status between April to August in FY2026-27. In addition, the positive reception of the three India-made cars also helped Suzuki become the largest vehicle importer in Japan during FY2025-26. The Maruti Suzuki made up almost the entire fleet of Suzuki imports in Japan during the given year.
The Maruti Suzuki has been expanding internationally using the existing global distribution channel of Suzuki Motor Corporation. Currently, it exports its cars to about 120 countries and continues its leadership as the largest passenger vehicle exporter of India from FY2021-22 to FY2025-26.
The overseas sales of the automaker have been on an increasing trend during the current financial year. In the period from April to August 2026-27, the automobile company has exported over 1.8 lakh vehicles, which form over 50 percent of India’s passenger vehicle exports. This latest milestone is another feather in the cap of the company as an important player in Indian automotive exports.
