It was on 8 June 2020 that 28-year-old Disha Salian died after falling from a high-rise residential building in Mumbai’s Malad area. The death was called a suicide after an investigation. On 14 June the same year, Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead in his Bandra apartment.
The agency has filed a case under Indian Penal Code sections covering offences such as criminal conspiracy, gang rape, murder, causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen offenders, public servants disobeying directions of law with intent to save persons from punishment and public servants framing incorrect record with intent to save persons from punishment.
The case comes days after the Bombay High Court ordered a probe into the death of Salian, then manager of Sushant Singh Rajput who died by suicide nearly a week later. Alleging that his daughter had not committed suicide as claimed by the Mumbai Police probe, Salian’s father Satish Salin had moved the plea in the high court seeking a probe by the CBI. The agency had also probed the unnatural death of Rajput and questioned, among others, Chakraborty, his girlfriend at the time. However, the agency filed a closure report in the case and exonerated her of all charges.
“The then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, father of Aaditya Thackeray, and others also played a significant role in the conspiracy and subsequent cover-up. The concerned public servants and police officers are also liable to be investigated for the destruction or suppression of case papers, files, and other public records; the fabrication of official records; and the misuse of public funds, manpower, and police machinery for unlawful purposes and for shielding the offenders,” reads the agency’s FIR—based on the father’s allegations—according to sources privy to the probe.
“The persons whose roles require investigation in connection with the commission of the principal offences, criminal conspiracy, subsequent creation and propagation of the false suicide story, and suppression, destruction and/or fabrication of evidence include Aaditya Thackeray. Rohan Roy, Dino Morea, Sooraj Pancholi, Aaditya Thackeray’s bodyguards, Rhea Chakraborty, Showik Chakraborty, Sachin Vaze, Param Bir Singh, DCP Vishal Thakur, Uddhav Thackeray, Anil Deshmukh, API Ashok Devadhe, PI Jagdev Kalapad, PI Shailendra Nagarkar, PI Chimaji Adhav, PI Arjun Rajane, the concerned officers of Malvani Police Station, the doctors and staff concerned with the delayed post-mortem…” the FIR further says.
CBI officials emphasised that no one has been named as an accused or a prime suspect in the case, in accordance with the Bombay High Court’s orders earlier this week.
“Nobody shall be treated as an accused unless in the opinion of the Investigating Officer there are sufficient grounds to raise reasonable suspicion against him depending on the material collected during the investigation,” the high court had said in the order.
