Jessie Irvine and claimed two gold medals apiece at the Kuala Lumpur Cup, a PPA Asia 1000 event, on Championship Sunday.
Irvine and Tardio emerged as champions in the mixed doubles final, claiming the gold medal. Despite trailing 2-7 in the deciding third game against Danni-Elle Townsend and Joey Wild, they sealed the title with a 5-11, 11-3, 12-10 victory.
In the men’s doubles final, Tardio and Noe Khlif defeated second seeds Augustus Ge and Len Yang 11-9, 11-4 to lift the title. The victory completed a golden double for Tardio on his first trip to Malaysia.
Irvine, meanwhile, completed her golden double by partnering Alix Truong in women’s doubles. The pair recovered from losing the opening game to beat Sahra Dennehy and Townsend 5-11, 11-5, 11-6.
While Irvine and Tardio dominated the doubles events, 15-year-old Tama Shimabukuro continued his breakthrough run in Asia by claiming the men’s singles crown.
The American teenager defeated Khlif 11-8, 11-5 to win his second Asia singles title, adding the Kuala Lumpur Cup crown to the Macao Open title he secured in May.
The defeat meant Khlif missed out on completing a sensational Asia debut with singles gold but still finished the tournament as a champion after partnering Tardio to men’s doubles glory.
In the women’s singles final, top seed Kaitlyn Christian rallied past Brooke Buckner 9-11, 11-4, 11-5 to claim the title.
It was Christian’s third consecutive victory over Buckner, mirroring her comeback win in the Hanoi Cup final earlier this year. The triumph also marked her second gold in Malaysia.
