Actress Rasika Duggal has returned to the screen as Beena Tripathi, popularly known as Beena Bhabhi, in “Mirzapur: The Movie.” She describes Beena as a survivor who understands her weaknesses and knows how to leverage them to her advantage.
Duggal explained that viewers will discover how Beena evolved through the film, which provides context to her life and attitude.
When asked about her strong association with Beena after “Mirzapur,” and whether she felt pressure to avoid being typecast, Duggal pointed to her work in projects like “Manto” and “Delhi Crime.” She emphasized that these roles were physically and characteristically distinct from Beena, which helped her sidestep typecasting.
“Both characters allowed me to explore a range of versatility,” she said. Duggal acknowledged that Beena brought her fame and a box-office hit, but she believes her role as Safia in “Manto” is equally significant. She praised director Nandita Das for her sensitive portrayal of Safia, highlighting that the film does not overlook the story of Manto’s wife while focusing on the renowned writer.
Duggal noted that while men’s stories often dominate narratives, women’s stories deserve equal recognition and depth.
