The third week of September is set to bring a diverse lineup to theatres, with 13 films scheduled to arrive between September 17 and 18. The releases span Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and English cinema, covering genres ranging from crime and action to comedy, romance, family drama, horror and science fiction.
Daayra leads the Hindi lineup
Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran headline Daayra, one of the notable Hindi releases scheduled for September 18. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film revolves around a rape survivor and a 17-year-old juvenile accused in the case. The story also examines questions surrounding the encounter of the minor accused and the circumstances that follow.
The film is expected to bring a serious social subject to the big screen while focusing on the legal and human dimensions surrounding the case.
Love Lottery and Vibe bring different flavours
Akshay Oberoi’s Love Lottery is another Hindi release arriving on September 18. The film has been directed by Arvind Pandey and written by Ankur Khatri, with Kuldeep Bhargava serving as producer.
Kunal Kemmu is also returning with Vibe, following the positive audience response to his directorial debut Madgaon Express. Kemmu has directed the new project, which features Preity Zinta, Sparsh Shrivastav and Vanshika Dheer among its cast.
More Hindi releases explore social and patriotic themes
Bharat Desh Hai Mera is a smaller-budget Hindi film scheduled for the same release date. The story is centred on Kashmiri Pandits living in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and features Anup Jalota, Ramakant Singh, Aditya Mohan and KK Goswami.
Telugu cinema adds Secret Soldier to the week’s lineup. The film combines espionage with geopolitical tensions and stars Nihal Kodhaty, Surya Srinivas, Kamal Kamaraju and Harshita Rao.
For audiences looking for a lighter option, the Telugu family entertainer Happy Journey also opens on September 18. The cast includes Vamshidhar, Payal Radhakrishnan and Ravi Siva Teja.
Telugu romance joins the release slate
Kaagitham Padavalu is another Telugu title arriving in theatres. Starring Vardhan Gurralla and Krishna Priya, the film is positioned as a romantic drama. MGR Thukaram has written and directed the project.
The combination of family entertainment, romance and thriller-driven stories gives Telugu audiences several different options during the week.
Malayalam cinema brings action and supernatural drama
Malayalam cinema has two distinct offerings in the lineup. L&O – Law and Order combines action, crime and drama, with Prakash Varma, Mammootty, Abhirami and Rithudev among the cast.
It’s a Medical Miracle takes a very different route, blending drama with supernatural thriller elements. The story follows a girl who becomes brain-dead but later appears to regain consciousness and remains capable of hearing what is happening around her. Sangeeth Pratap and Akhila Bhargavan are among the actors featured in the film.
Tamil films add thriller and comedy choices
Tamil cinema contributes three releases. Ena Vilai, scheduled for September 17, is a social drama and thriller centred on a fisherman who discovers gold-related items near the sea and later finds himself facing serious allegations.
The Dark Heaven revolves around a series of murders in a village. An honest police officer takes charge of the investigation, giving the film a crime-thriller focus.
Nallapadam takes a lighter approach as a comedy-drama. Its story follows an alcoholic who establishes an association for people dealing with similar drinking habits. Harish and Dhanalakshmi are among the cast.
Resident Evil brings Hollywood horror
The English-language release Resident Evil rounds out the week’s major theatrical offerings. The film combines action, horror, science fiction and thriller elements and is also expected to be available in Hindi and several other languages.
