Alert, Delhi party lovers! October to remain dry with restrictions on liquor sales on multiple days

New Delhi: As September draws to a close, Delhi gears up for a festive October, with several major celebrations lined up across the city and the country. While festivals bring vibrancy and cultural fervour, they also coincide with closures of liquor shops on designated dry days. For residents of the capital, this means planning, as alcohol sales will be restricted on multiple occasions.

The month begins on October 1 with Navami, marking the final day of Navratri and Durga Puja festivities. Many Delhi residents traditionally abstain from alcohol during this period, and liquor shops in areas with high religious observance may see minimal activity.

The following day, October 2, is Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, a nationwide dry day. This year, it coincides with Dussehra, further limiting alcohol sales across Delhi. Authorities ensure that liquor shops remain closed in prominent markets and neighbourhoods, keeping in line with the observance of the day.

Restrictions on alcohol sale during Diwali festivities

On October 7, Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti will be observed, and in Delhi, liquor outlets in areas with large celebrations may remain closed. Additionally, Diwali on October 21 will bring city-wide dry day restrictions, as the festival of lights sees families come together to celebrate. Residents should note that liquor shops in several neighbourhoods may not operate on the day itself.

Towards the end of the month, Chhath Puja on October 28 will also be observed in Delhi, especially in localities with sizeable North Indian communities. In some areas, shops may remain closed as early as October 26 and through October 28 to respect the religious rituals.
