Mithun Chakraborty’s journey from extreme hardship to Bollywood stardom is nothing short of remarkable. The actor, who once struggled for basic necessities and has recalled sleeping on the streets and even cleaning an office in return for access to its washroom, went on to become one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable stars. Even after winning a National Award for his debut, he has spoken about a time when he had to ask an interviewer for food. Today, his life is a stark contrast to those early years, with the actor owning several properties across India, including a sprawling bungalow on nearly 1.5 acres, or around 65,000 sq ft, in Mumbai’s Madh Island.
A bungalow that’s anything but ordinary
’s sprawling Madh Island property is much more than a traditional celebrity bungalow. The estate features separate cottages for family members, space for 22 dogs, lush gardens and even a dedicated studio where his sons work on films and build different sets, reports Pinkvilla. The property was named after his eldest son, Mimoh, and has evolved significantly since the family bought it in 1985.
It started as a holiday home
According to Namashi Chakraborty, Chakraborty’s eldest son, the family initially used the property as a holiday home before moving to Ooty. They eventually returned to Mumbai in 2007 and renovated the Madh Island bungalow into their full-time residence. Mithun’s love for gardening is also reflected across the sprawling property, which provides plenty of open space for the family’s pets.

One of the most unusual parts of the home tour is a yellow Beetle that Namashi described as his father’s “first home” in Mumbai. Mithun reportedly spent around 15 days living in the car when he had nowhere else to stay. The property has also hosted lavish Diwali celebrations over the years, with stars including and among the guests.
Every family member gets their own space
The bungalow’s most distinctive feature is its collection of separate cottages, reflecting Mithun and his father’s belief that children should have their own space. Different cottages now serve different functions: one is a gym, another accommodates guests, while Mithun and his wife use another when they are in Mumbai. There is also an office where film discussions and script narrations take place, decorated with Mithun’s awards, fan artwork and photographs from his career, including moments with Rajkumar, and Bal Thackeray.
It has its own film studio too
Part of the property has now been turned into a professional studio called Myrnd Bungalow, which can be booked for film shoots and weddings. A separate room within the residence is also used by Mithun and his sons for film narrations and project discussions. Despite the property’s scale and its connection to the film industry, Namashi says family dinners are far less glamorous, the conversation is usually about food, with Mithun’s chicken biryani being a particular favourite.
