Athletics Final Series: Karnataka’s Krishik wins 110m hurdles; Tanya Chaudhary breaks national hammer record

Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Krishik M bagged home a cheque of Rs 1 lakh with a victory in the men’s 110m hurdles at the Indian Athletics Final Series in New Delhi on Thursday.

The 22-year-old Tumakuru athlete, who isn’t part of the 77-member Asian Games squad, clocked 13.65 seconds to dominate the event in the absence of national record holder Tejas Shirse, who is out for the season with injury.

Karnataka’s Sinchal Kaveramma (59.91s) ran to second place in the women’s 400m hurdles, collecting prize money of Rs 50,000.

Karnataka’s veteran 400m runners Poovamma M R (52.76s) and high jumper Supriya S B (1.78m) warmed up for the Asiad with a third-place finish in their respective events, bagging Rs 25,000 each.

The day, however, belonged to UP’s Tanya Chaudhary, who shattered the women’s hammer throw national record to take the unexpected spotlight.

Tanya sent the chain and iron to a distance of 68.35m, bettering state-mate Anushka Yadav’s earlier national record of 67.02m set in June. Anushka finished second with 66.34m. Both Tanya and Anushka are in the Asian Games team.
