Ricky Ponting is set to make his presence felt in the third edition of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), having joined the Australia Champions as their owner.
David Warner was unveiled as the captain of the Australian team, in a press conference held in Melbourne, Australia. “I’m excited to be part of Australia Champions and the World Championship of Legends. With Puneet and the team, and David leading from the front, we have a great opportunity to build something special for Australian cricket fans,” Ponting said.
“I’m really excited to lead Australia Champions in WCL Season 3. There’s nothing better than getting back out there, playing alongside some greats of the game and giving the fans plenty to cheer about,” said David Warner, the new captain of Australia Champions.
Warner retired from international cricket in 2024. He played his last game for Australia in the 2024 T20 World Cup against India. Warner signed off from ODI cricket on a high note and retired after winning the 2023 World Cup in India. He scored 6932 runs in ODIs and 3277 runs in T20Is.
retired from Test cricket after playing a home game against Pakistan in January 2024. He finished his career with 8786 runs. The former Australia vice-captain hit 26 Test centuries and has a highest score of an unbeaten 335.
As for Ponting, he scored 13378 runs in 168 Tests, 13704 runs in 375 ODIs and 401 runs in 17 T20Is he played. Ponting was the captain of arguably the most dominant Australian team that won the 2003 and 2007 ODI World Cups. They also won the 1999 ODI World Cup. Australia’s unbeaten streak of 34 wins ended in the 2011 World Cup.
Australia’s performance in past tournaments
Australia finished first in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2024. They crashed out after losing to Australia Champions in the final. In 2025, Australia managed two wins to finish third in the table. They lost to eventual winners South Africa in the semi-final.
