“I Want to Work With Good Makers Everywhere, Language No Bar”: Malavika Mohanan on Her Boundless Journey in Cinema

Malavika Mohanan has built a diverse filmography by working across languages and industries and sharing the screen with some of the biggest names in Indian cinema. From Prabhas and Thalapathy Vijay to Rajinikanth, her journey has been defined by varied collaborations, acclaimed filmmakers and opportunities that have allowed her to experience different worlds of cinema. Rather than limiting herself to one industry or language, Malavika has embraced every opportunity that comes her way, keeping her career as unpredictable and exciting as her choices.

In a recent interaction Malavika says, she doesn’t believe careers in cinema can be charted in advance. What she can point to is the range of it shooting alongside communities in Wayanad, filming on a remote island in Portugal, sharing a frame with some of the most enigmatic stars in our country, from Prabhas to Thalapathy Vijay and Rajinikanth, interacting with them and learning how they think and live. “My career graph is something that always keeps me stimulated, that constantly feeds my curiosity,” she says, and it’s hard not to read that as the closest thing she has to a mission statement. Not a plan, exactly, but a way of seeing, pointed toward whatever comes next. She counts herself fortunate to have worked with some of the country’s best directors early in her career, and she has made a conscious choice not to tether herself to one film industry. “I want to work with good makers everywhere, language no bar,” she says, pointing to the post-OTT era as one where a good film no longer needs a translator to find its audience.

On the work front, Malavika will next be seen alongside Karthi in Sardar 2 and Vijay Sethupathi in Pocket Novel, adding yet another exciting chapter to her ever-evolving journey.
