Stands as MotoGP Leader Despite Paradoxical Performance at Misano
As the reaches its 14th round at the San Marino in Misano, Jorge Martin of Aprilia Racing holds the top spot in the standings with 256 points.
He leads by a margin of 19 points over Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo) and 24 points ahead of his Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi. However, Martin’s position at the summit conceals a number of striking contradictions in his 2024 campaign.
Unlike his closest rivals, Martin has secured only a single race victory this season, achieved at Le Mans, while both Marquez and Bezzecchi have each won four races. Despite this, Martin’s remarkable consistency has kept him in contention: whenever he fails to win, he finishes within the top five. Alex Marquez highlighted this unique approach, stating, “Jorge is the only one managing to save the situation with fourth and fifth places… that’s how he accumulates points.”
Yet, Martin’s aggressive style has also led to him sharing the dubious distinction of most crashes this year, tied at 16 with Joan Mir. This paradox-leading the championship without multiple wins and simultaneously being the rider with the highest number of falls-stems from a tumultuous start to his season. A preseason injury forced Martin to miss winter tests, casting doubt on his participation in the opening race. Despite these setbacks, he has rebounded impressively to lead the standings.
Martin himself acknowledges his ongoing adaptation struggles with the Aprilia RS-GP26, conceding after Aragon, “I think I am missing many laps on the Aprilia, and I am still in the process of adapting to the bike.” This candid admission underscores his strategic approach: pushing hard to collect significant points each race while battling the learning curve of his machine.
Approaching Misano, a circuit where he triumphed in 2023, Martin adopts a cautiously optimistic stance. He remarked, “The Misano GP is always special when you race for an Italian team, and with Aprilia and the fans, I am confident it will be a great weekend. We arrive at a track I like after a good job in Aragon, and our goals are clear. Being top of the standings is important for the whole Aprilia team, but given the very tight gaps, it is neither a priority nor a decisive factor. We must keep focusing on our work. I look forward to riding the RS-GP26 and giving my best at Aprilia’s home race.”
