India’s top 10 car sales report for August 2026 threw up a major upset, with the Tata Punch becoming the country’s number one car, nearly doubling its sales year on year. Maruti Suzuki’s WagonR, Swift and Fronx also performed strongly, while the Hyundai Creta posted only modest growth. Here is the full top 10 list.
Tata Punch
Tata Punch topped the sales charts in August 2026, with 21,320 units sold, marking a 99% year-on-year jump from 10,704 units in August 2025. Priced from Rs 5.59 lakh, the 2026 facelift gets a 10.25 inch touchscreen, a sunroof and a 360 degree camera, along with six airbags and a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating. Mileage stands at 19-20 km/l on petrol and 27 km/kg on CNG.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR
Maruti Suzuki WagonR finished second with 20,180 units sold in August 2026, up 39% from 14,552 units a year earlier. It remains one of India’s most trusted hatchbacks, known for its tall-boy design, spacious cabin and strong CNG mileage, making it a consistent favourite among middle class buyers.
Swift and Fronx
Maruti Swift sold 19,832 units, up a sharp 60% from 12,385 units in August 2025, taking third place. The Maruti Fronx followed in fourth with 18,730 units, up 51% year on year, continuing its strong run as one of Maruti’s top performers through the Nexa network this year.
Ertiga stays flat while Nexon grows 32%
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga held fifth place with 18,516 units, just 71 units more than the 18,445 units sold in August 2025, marking its slowest growth on this list. The Tata Nexon followed in sixth with 18,431 units, up 32% year on year, remaining Tata’s second-strongest performer after the Punch.
Dzire, Creta, Baleno and Scorpio complete the list
Maruti Dzire held seventh place with 18,418 units, up 12% year on year, remaining India’s top-selling sedan. The Hyundai Creta followed in eighth with 16,288 units, up just 2%, its only appearance among Hyundai models in the top 10. The Maruti Baleno took ninth with 15,746 units, up 25%, while the Mahindra Scorpio rounded off the list in tenth with 15,576 units, posting the sharpest growth on the list at 58%.
