Mani Ratnam’s much-awaited romantic drama starring Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi has finally got its title. The film, which had been generating curiosity since its announcement, is now officially called Inji Vellam. The makers unveiled the title and first look on September 7, giving fans their first proper glimpse of the lead pair together. The motion poster shows Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi sharing a warm embrace in the rain, hinting at an emotional love story. With Mani Ratnam returning to romance, AR Rahman composing the music, and Kolkata forming an important backdrop, expectations are already high for the film.

The title Inji Vellam was revealed by the makers along with a first-look motion poster. The poster features Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi in a close embrace as rain surrounds them.
The title has an interesting meaning too. Inji Vellam translates to ‘ginger water’ in Malayalam. While the makers have not explained the connection between the title and the story yet, its unusual combination has already caught attention.
Before the title announcement, the film had already created buzz through glimpses from its Kolkata schedule. Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi were spotted shooting around the city, including the iconic Howrah Bridge. Their pictures and videos from the sets were all over the internet.
A major portion of the film has been shot in Kolkata, and the city appears to play an important role in its visual world.

Inji Vellam marks ’s return to the romance genre after his previous directorial Thug Life. The filmmaker has previously created several memorable romantic films, including Mouna Ragam, Alaipayuthey, and OK Kanmani. His return to this space with Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi has therefore become one of the most awaited aspects of the project.
The film also brings Mani Ratnam and Vijay Sethupathi together again after Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. For Sai Pallavi, the project marks her first collaboration with the acclaimed filmmaker. The pairing of Vijay and Sai is another major talking point.
AR Rahman is composing the music for Inji Vellam, continuing his long-running creative association with Mani Ratnam. The film is being produced by Subaskaran, Mani Ratnam and Siva Ananth under Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies. As per reports, Netflix has also acquired its streaming rights.
Inji Vellam is currently scheduled to release theatrically in January 2027. However, an exact release date is yet to be announced.
