New Delhi: Coco Gauff reached the women’s singles fourth round at the with a convincing victory against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa on Sunday, September 06. Gauff defeated Bucsa 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the fourth round of the US Open for the fifth year in a row.
The fourth seed, who won the US Open title in 2023, was not at her best at the start of the contest but found her mojo despite facing pressure to wrap up a comfortable victory. Gauff trailed 1-3 in the opening set but broke Bucsa twice to clinch it 6-3. In the second set, she produced another break before winning it 6-4 to storm into the fourth round of the tournament.
“I’m just happy with how I fought through, even when I wasn’t playing my best,” Gauff said after her victory.
“I feel like I’m used to getting to the second week now. Last year, I put so much pressure on myself. I’m enjoying the experience out here,” she added.
Naomi Osaka survives three-set thriller
Two-time champion Naomi Osaka survived a three-set thriller against 23rd seed Elise Mertens to reach the fourth round at the US Open 2026. Osaka beat Mertens 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in a hard-fought clash. The Japanese 13th seed made a strong start to the contest and secured a 4-1 lead in the first set before eventually winning 6-3.
Mertens bounced back in the second game to clinch it 3-6 before Osaka held her nerve to seal the decider 7-5 and reach the fourth round of the tournament. Osaka opted for a medical timeout during the third set before returning to finish the game. The Japanese star will take on 2nd seed Elena Rybakina in the round of 16.
Iva Jovic beats Alexander Eala
Meanwhile, Iva Jovic beat Alexander Eala 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 to knock her out of the tournament and secure a spot in the 4th round at the US Open 2026. Jovic recorded arguably the biggest win of her US Open career by beating her best friend Eala in a game that lasted three hours and three minutes.
Jovic has so far made it to the fourth round of all Grand Slams this season and will take on Gauff in a crucial clash in the round of 16.
