Kia is set to enter India’s factory-fitted CNG passenger vehicle market with new CNG versions of Carens and Carens Clavis. The company announced key specifications and showcased its CNG technology on the sidelines of . Prices have not been announced yet, with the market launch expected in the coming days.
Both Carens and Carens Clavis CNG will use the existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a factory-fitted CNG system. The CNG setup is aimed at buyers looking for lower running costs while retaining the practicality of Kia’s three-row MPVs.
Kia Carens CNG – 96 PS, 123 Nm
According to the specifications showcased by Kia at the event, the engine produces 96 PS and 123 Nm in CNG mode. Kia says the setup has been tested and calibrated for real-world performance. The CNG versions will use a 60-litre CNG tank positioned in the boot.
Despite the additional hardware, Kia has managed to retain the spare wheel, which continues to be mounted underneath the vehicle. The addition of a large CNG cylinder will naturally affect available luggage space, although Kia has not yet revealed the exact boot capacity for the CNG versions.
Suspension, Brakes Retuned
Carens and Carens Clavis CNG aren’t limited to just an additional fuel system. Kia has reportedly made changes to account for the extra weight of the CNG hardware. Suspension has been retuned, while the front disc brakes have also been upgraded.
These changes are intended to compensate for the additional weight of the CNG tank and associated components. Fuel efficiency is another important number that remains under wraps. Kia has not announced the official CNG mileage yet, and this is likely to be revealed closer to the price announcement.
Factory-Fitted CNG For Carens
The development is significant because Kia has so far not offered a factory-fitted CNG powertrain in its Indian passenger vehicle portfolio. Carens has previously been available with a CNG conversion through a dealer-level fitment, whereas the upcoming version will be offered with a CNG system from the factory.
CNG could also broaden the appeal of Carens and Carens Clavis among buyers with high monthly running, where lower fuel costs can play a significant role in the purchase decision.
