EVM: A Stand Alone Machine
EVM is an electronic machine for submitting votes. Electronic voting machine is made up of two units which include – control unit and balloting unit. These are connected by a five meter cable.
- EVM is a stand alone machine, no network of any kind is connected to it.
- According to the Election Commission, these machines are not controlled by any computer.
- EVM does not have a frequency receiver or decoder for data. After voting they are sealed. After this, it is opened only on the result day amidst tight security.
Control Unit (CU): The control unit is with the presiding officer i.e. Returning Officer (RO).
Balloting Unit (BU): The balloting unit is kept in the voting compartment. People come here and vote.
Process of voting through EVM machine
The presiding officer verifies the identity of the voter, after which he presses the ballot button of the control unit. After this process, the voter can vote by pressing the blue button in front of the candidate’s election symbol present at the balloting unit.
Who designed EVM?
The EVM has been designed and developed by the Technical Expert Committee (TEC) of the Election Commission in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Limited (BHEL), Bengaluru and Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), Hyderabad. . EVM machines are manufactured only by BHEL and ECIL.
VVPAT with EVM
Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) also comes with EVM. From which a slip comes out. In this slip, the photograph and election symbol of the candidate for whom the vote has been cast is visible. This lets you know that your boat is placed exactly where you wanted it to be.
