Lucknow, Sep 3: Bhuvneshwar Kumar once again showed why experience remains such a valuable commodity in T20 cricket, producing a superb four-wicket spell to lead Lucknow Falcons into the Uttar Pradesh T20 League 2026 final on Thursday (September 3).
The veteran Uttar Pradesh right-arm pacer, who also captains the Falcons, returned figures of 4/10 from four overs as Lucknow defended 145 against Meerut Mavericks in Qualifier 1 at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. Meerut were restricted to 98/8, handing Lucknow a convincing 47-run victory and a direct passage to the final.
Bhuvneshwar strikes four times
Bhuvneshwar’s impact was immediate. The 36-year-old removed Akshay Dubey for four with a caught-and-bowled dismissal before trapping Rituraj Sharma lbw for a first-ball duck in the same over.
He returned to strike again in his second over, getting Divyansh Rajput caught by Vipraj Nigam for one. His fourth wicket came when Divyansh Joshi, who made six, was caught by wicketkeeper Aaradhya Yadav.
The four wickets left Meerut in serious trouble early in the chase and gave Lucknow complete control. The official UP T20 League scorecard confirms Bhuvneshwar’s figures of 4-0-10-4, with his four victims accounting for a significant portion of Meerut’s early collapse.
Captain leads from the front
The performance was particularly significant because Bhuvneshwar was not simply operating as a senior bowler. He was leading the Falcons in a knockout game where the team had only managed 145.
Lucknow were bowled out in 19.4 overs, leaving Meerut with a chaseable target if their top order could provide a strong start. Instead, Bhuvneshwar’s early strikes put the Mavericks on the back foot almost immediately.
Meerut slipped to 24/6 before Rinku Singh and Zeeshan Ansari attempted to rebuild the innings. Rinku scored 34 off 40 balls, while Ansari remained unbeaten on 30, but the early damage proved too much to overcome.
Age no barrier for Bhuvneshwar
For Bhuvneshwar, the four-for is another reminder of the qualities that have made him one of India’s most accomplished swing and seam bowlers. His effectiveness is not dependent purely on pace; the veteran continues to rely on accuracy, control and his ability to trouble batters with the new ball.
The 36-year-old’s latest performance also comes after an impressive IPL 2026 campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he finished among the leading wicket-takers with 21 wickets.
His UPT20 performance, however, had an even greater significance. With the tournament reaching its business end, Bhuvneshwar delivered when his team needed him most.
The Falcons can now wait for the winner of the second qualifier, between Meerut Mavericks – who get another chance to make it to the finals – and Noida Kings, knowing their captain has already produced the defining performance of the first knockout game.
