Kolkata: Janmashtami will be celebrated today in many parts of the country but the Indian stock market will remain open despite the occasion.
According to the 2026 stock market calendar, there are no scheduled trading holidays in this month. The occasion is an annual Hindu festival commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna. But the equity and equity derivatives segments of the BSE and NSE will function normally. Both exchanges will function for the normal business hours.
Commodity markets to remain open
Like the equity markets, the commodity market will be open too. Trading in both agricultural and non-agricultural commodities on the MCX (Multi Commodity Exchange) will take place as usual today. The exchange will operate on both the morning and evening trading sessions without any changes.
The bullion markets will function normally during the day too.

The 2026 stock market holiday calendar tells us that there are no scheduled trading holidays in September. As a result, investors can expect a full trading month, with the NSE and BSE operating normally on all weekdays, apart from the usual weekend breaks. The next trading holiday for BSE and NSE is on September 14, when Ganesh Chaturthi will be observed. The other market holidays for the year include Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali on November 10, Prakash Gurpurb on November 24 and Christmas on December 25.
Are banks closed due to Janmashtami?
Banks will remain closed today in several cities due to Janmashtami. These cities include Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada. Therefore, if you have any business for which you have to visit the branch of a bank, it is advisable that you check with your bank and then get out. However, the ATMs will function without a break as will digital and online banking.
