Maruti Suzuki remained India’s largest carmaker in terms of sales in August 2026 with sales of 1,76,971 units during the month. Mahindra and Tata Motors followed in the second and third spot with sales of 59,257 and 65,253 units respectively, while Kia pushed Toyota to fifth place.
Most of the leading manufacturers reported healthy annual growth in the August 2026 passenger vehicle sales data. Maruti Suzuki continued to enjoy a massive lead over its nearest rivals, while Kia staged a strong comeback by reclaiming the fifth spot.
1. Maruti Suzuki
continued to dominate the rankings as the best selling car manufacturer in India in August 2026, clocking passenger vehicle sales figures of 1,76,971 units. On the other hand, the number of units it managed to sell in the corresponding month of the previous year was 1,31,278 units, which is an improvement of 45,673 units, translating to a growth rate of 34.80 percent.
This car maker enjoyed an edge over its competitors, having August sales figures almost 2.5 times that of the 65,253 units achieved by Tata Motors, which placed second out of the six car makers covered in this report.
2. Tata Motors
In August 2026, Tata Motors sells 65,253 passenger cars in India, compared to 41,001 units in the same month of the previous year. This is a year-on-year rise by 24,252 units and a growth rate of 59.14 per cent, which is the highest amongst the six top selling car manufacturers.
3. Mahindra
For the month of August 2026, Mahindra registered passenger vehicle sales of 59,257 units in India, which was a jump from the previous year when 39,399 units were sold in August. Mahindra managed to grow by 19,858 units from the previous year, recording a 50.40% increase to secure third place in monthly sales.
4. Hyundai
Hyundai’s sale of passenger cars was 54,396 units in the month of August 2026 against 44,001 units in August 2025. This is an increment of 10,395 units for Hyundai resulting in 23.62% annual growth, putting Hyundai at the fourth place amongst the top six car manufacturers in India.
5. Kia
The total number of units sold by Kia as a domestic passenger car in August 2026 was 29,042 while the units sold in the same month the previous year were 19,608. Therefore, the company sold an additional 9,434 units and achieved a growth rate of 48.11 per cent and managed to grab the fifth position.
