New Delhi: Rohit Sharma’s ODI future remains under the scanner as enter their final lap of preparations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup next year.
Reports went viral earlier this year that Rohit might consider retiring from international cricket after being informed by the selectors that he was no longer in India’s plans for next year’s World Cup.
The reports had gone viral during India’s ODI series against England in July, with the third and final ODI between the two sides at Lord’s expected to be the Hitman’s last game for the Men in Blue. However, as it turned out, went on to smash a brilliant hundred in the game to change the narrative.
Calling the reports and rumours regarding his retirement ‘noise’, Rohit reiterated that he was not going anywhere. However, a report has now revealed that Rohit agreed to retire from ODIs after the selectors sent a message that they didn’t view him in India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
As per PTI, Rohit had agreed to retire after being conveyed the message from the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. Though Rohit and those close to him maintained silence on the matter and the senior batter was left angry, he agreed that Lord’s ODI against England would be his last.
However, his century at Lord’s ruled out the possibility of retirement for the time being. Despite avoiding retirement, Rohit’s selection in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup squad remains uncertain.
BCCI to discuss Rohit Sharma’s future
Rohit’s future with Team India will be discussed in the BCCI review meeting, which is set to take place in Mumbai today. India’s roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup will also be discussed alongside the futures of the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli, in the meeting which will be attended by head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill and India’s T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer are also expected to attend the BCCI review meeting in Mumbai.
