BCCI ‘200% fitness’ rule for Bumrah, Nitish, Harshit, Washington: Why Agarkar, Gambhir and Gill are under scanner over Afghanistan T20I selection

India have announced a 15-member squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, starting on September 13. However, the selection has raised questions about India’s team strategy and the fitness of some players.

Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana have been picked with fitness conditions. This means they will be allowed to play only after the BCCI is fully sure about their match fitness.

The selection strategy has also put the focus on chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill. The team management will now have to make sure that players are not rushed back before they are ready.

Why are Agarkar, Gambhir and Gill under the scanner?

The selection of players who are still recovering from injuries has raised questions about India’s approach. The selectors and team management have to balance the need to pick the best players with the need to protect them from further injuries.

Agarkar, Gambhir and Gill will be closely watched during the series, especially if any of the players with fitness conditions are included in the playing XI. The main question will be whether India can avoid the injury problems seen in recent months.

Why has the BCCI changed its fitness approach?

The BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru has faced criticism over injury management in recent months.

Several players, including Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy, have been selected for teams despite fitness concerns. Some of them later missed matches after playing only one or two games.

The BCCI now wants to avoid repeating this situation. The board has brought in a stricter approach to check the match fitness of players before they are allowed to play.

What does the 200 percent fitness rule mean?

Reports suggest that the selectors now want complete clarity about a player’s fitness before giving him permission to play. The idea is that a player should not just be 100 percent fit. The selectors want to be 200 percent sure about his availability before releasing him for a series. This approach is aimed at stopping players from returning too early and suffering another injury.

What did BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia say?

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has also explained why some players have an asterisk (*) next to their names in the squad.

He said that teams for international series are often selected three to four weeks before the matches. Therefore, a player who is not fully fit on the day of selection can still recover before the series begins.

Saikia explained that the BCCI does not want to leave out a player only because he is not fit on the day the squad is announced. If the player becomes fit during the next 21 to 28 days, he can still be available for the series.

Which players could miss the Afghanistan series?

Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy are reportedly recovering well and are expected to be available for the series.

However, there are still questions over Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar. Their fitness will be checked before they are cleared to play.

The first T20I will be played in Delhi on September 13. The BCCI and team management will not want to take any unnecessary risk with players who are still recovering.

For Agarkar, Gambhir and Gill, the Afghanistan series will therefore be important not only for results but also for showing that India has a clear plan for player fitness and team selection.
