Jasprit Bumrah’s Dismal IPL 2026 Season Sets Embarrassing Record; Hits Low No Bowler In History Has Hit Before

Jasprit Bumrah set a dismal record after he did not play the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

This meant that Bumrah’s campaign ended with just four wickets to his name.

The 32-year-old played 13 matches for the franchise this season, including one game as captain. He finished with an average of 102.5 after bowling 49 overs. However, he had an impressive economy rate of 8.36. In no match this season did the modern-day great manage to take more than one wicket in a match. In fact, he went wicketless nine times, with his only dismissals being Sai Sudharsan (Gujarat Titans), Kartik Sharma (Chennai Super Kings), and Sanju Samson (Chennai Super Kings).

Jasprit Bumrah’s Unwanted Record

Bumrah is the first bowler in the history of the IPL to bowl at least 30 overs and average over 100 over the course of a season. The previous worst figures were held by MI spinner Pragyan Ojha and were set in 2014. Among bowlers to bowl over 40 overs in a season, only three have had an average above 70.

Worst Bowling Average In An IPL Season (Minimum 30 Overs Bowled)

Player Bowling Average Overs bowled Wickets Taken Year
Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians) 102.5 49 4 2026
Pragyan Ojha (Mumbai Indians) 95 46 4 2014
Prasidh Krishna (Kolkata Knight Riders) 94.25 40.2 4 2019
Shahbaz Ahmed (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) 84 35 4 2022
JP Duminy (Delhi Daredevils) 80 33 3 2024

Among bowlers with a worse economy rate than Bumrah in a season, no one bowled more than 25 overs in a season. Kieron Pollard (131 average in 25 overs in 2014) and Mohit Sharma (128.5 average in 25 overs in 2014) are the only bowlers above Bumrah after bowling 150 or more balls in a season.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Worst IPL Season?

Bumrah’s economy rate of 8.36 is the worst in a season for the Indian cricket legend since the 2025 campaign (12.26). His debut campaign in 2013 is the only other instance of him having a worse economy rate (10.0) in a single edition. Although it is worth noting that he only played two games in 2013 and four games in 2015.

Meanwhile, his wicket tally of four wickets is the third-worst in a single edition for him after 2013 and 2015 (3 wickets each). Prior to this season, his worst season after playing more than five matches was in 2011, when he took just five wickets after playing 11 games at an economy and average of 7.58 and 60.20, respectively.

While Bumrah’s numbers are poor from the high standards he has set, his economy rate is the fifth best this season among bowlers that have bowled at least 30 overs. Only Sunil Narine (6.4), Axar Patel (8.05), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (8.07), and Lungi Ngidi (8.3) did better than him on this aspect.

Bumrah’s economy rate is also the best among MI bowlers in the 2026 seasons. No one who even bowled 1 ball for the franchise this season did better than him.
