The death toll from the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal last week has climbed to 1,127, with search and rescue teams continuing to look for 4,858 people still missing, police said on Wednesday.
The latest toll includes 348 bodies recovered from Chitwan, 217 from Nawalparasi East, 190 from Nawalparasi West and 155 from Nuwakot. Another 66 bodies were recovered in Gorkha, 59 in Dhading, 45 in Rasuwa and 38 in Tanahu.
Of the 1,127 bodies recovered so far, postmortem and legal identification procedures have been completed for 1,113. Authorities have handed over 95 bodies to their families.
To help locate missing relatives, the Nepal Police has uploaded details of 911 unidentified bodies on its website for identification.
Security forces have so far rescued 6,541 people from flood-affected areas, while 7,912 police personnel have been deployed for search and rescue, relief work and management of recovered bodies.
Police teams are also relocating families from vulnerable areas, clearing roads blocked by debris and coordinating relief and rescue efforts with local authorities and residents.
The flash floods, triggered by the collapse or avalanche of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border, devastated several towns and villages across northern and central Nepal on August 26.
