New York, September 1: Iga Swiatek secured her place in the next round of the US Open by defeating Wang Xiyu in straight sets. Amanda Anisimova, Linda Noskova, and Karolina Muchova also progressed in the women’s singles competition.
Seven-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek triumphed over Wang with a score of 6-2, 6-3 in just one hour and 28 minutes. This victory marks her 28th consecutive win in the opening round of major tournaments. Her only loss in the first round of a Grand Slam came in 2019 at Wimbledon.
Anisimova advanced by beating American Ashlyn Krueger 6-1, 6-3. The finalist from last year’s New York tournament will face Austrian teenager Lili Tagger next.
Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova pulled off the day’s biggest upset against Katie Volynets. After trailing 2-5 in the first set and facing two set points, Noskova rallied to win 7-5, 6-1, claiming 11 of the last 12 games.
Muchova defeated Sinja Kraus 6-3, 6-0 in a match that lasted 58 minutes. Seeded 15th, Diana Schneider also moved forward with a 6-0, 6-4 Daria Snigur, while 16th seed Sorana Cirstea triumphed over Julia Grabher with a score of 6-3, 6-0.
Zheng Qinwen continued her comeback with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over 16-year-old qualifier Kristina Liutova. This marks Zheng’s fourth consecutive win since returning from injury, showcasing her strong form.
Former champion Sloane Stephens delivered an impressive performance, defeating Clara Tauson 6-4, 6-1, marking her first Grand Slam main draw victory since Wimbledon 2024.
Christina Buxa, who had only two wins in her last 11 matches, managed to overcome 28th seed Sara Bejlek with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Taylor Townsend also had a strong start, beating Roland Garros finalist and 20th seed Maja Chwalinska 6-2, 6-3. Eighteen-year-old Tagger recorded her first Grand Slam main draw victory by defeating Tamara Korpatsch 6-0, 7-6(4). Top seed and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka advanced by defeating Camila Osorio 6-2, 6-4.
