BENGALURU: Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the captain of a senior domestic team at the age of 15 after taking charge of East Zone in their Duleep Trophy semi-final against Central Zone on Sunday.
Vaibhav, who was the vice-captain, took over as stand-in captain after regular skipper and wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan suffered an injury while keeping wickets during the 19th over of Central Zone’s innings. Kishan left the field for medical attention, with Kumar Kushagra taking over the wicketkeeping duties.
Kishan had won the toss and elected to field. Following his injury, Vaibhav was handed the responsibility of leading an East Zone side featuring several players more experienced than him.
The match is Vaibhav’s second appearance in the Duleep Trophy and his 10th first-class game. He made his first-class debut in early 2024.
Central Zone were bowled out for 266 on the opening day. Abhijit Sarkar and Mukesh Kumar claimed three wickets each for East Zone, while Mohammed Shami and Md Kounain Quraishi took two wickets apiece.
