Brisbane, August 30: Australian fast bowler Michael Neser has decided to extend his contract with Brisbane Heat for an additional two years.
The club announced on Sunday that he will remain with the franchise until the end of the 17th season of the Big Bash League (BBL).
At 36 years old, Neser has been a key player for the Heat since the inaugural season in 2011/12 and will return for his seventh season with the team. This contract extension strengthens the team’s fast bowling attack, which includes national team bowlers Javier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson, along with emerging fast bowler Calum Widler.
Brisbane Heat’s new head coach, James Hopes, praised the impact of this experienced fast bowler on the team, emphasizing his contributions in high-pressure matches. He stated, “When the Heat is at its best, Neser is always at the center of action. His presence in the group consistently helps players strive to become a successful team.”
In a statement released by the franchise on Sunday, they expressed how wonderful it was to see Neser enjoying the Ashes victory and showcasing the same qualities in the Australian team. Neser is currently tied for ninth place on the list of all-time wicket-takers in the BBL, with 117 wickets from 105 matches. After playing nine seasons for Adelaide Strikers and playing a crucial role in securing the title in the seventh season, Neser returned to Brisbane Heat in 2021.
His performance in the 12th season of the BBL was outstanding, as he took a career-best 26 wickets, leading Brisbane Heat to the finals. In the following season, he claimed 12 wickets, helping the team win its second title. Neser has also been included in the 18-player men’s squad for Brisbane Heat for the 16th season of the BBL.
Expressing his happiness about the contract extension, Neser spoke about playing in front of enthusiastic home crowds at the Gabba. He remarked, “The best part about playing in the BBL is the opportunity to impact the game. There’s nothing better than being a player for Brisbane Heat at the Gabba, especially when the stadium is packed and the crowd is at its peak; in those crucial moments, you look up and realize that everyone is with you.”
This contract extension comes as the second agreement following the lifting of the player contract ban by Cricket Australia at the league level. This process began with Melbourne Renegades signing leg-spinner Michael Archer. Following the end of the ‘draft model’ for foreign players, clubs are now allowed to sign both domestic and international players directly.
