Premalu 2: Girish AD Reveals ‘Gut Feeling’ Behind Sequel Being Shelved

Premalu 2 has officially been shelved, with director Girish AD revealing that his own “gut feeling” played a role in the decision. The sequel to the hugely successful 2024 romantic comedy had been eagerly anticipated, after the original became a massive hit, and became popular even beyond Malayalam cinema. Backed by Bhavana Studios, Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran, the romantic comedy centred on Sachin, played by Naslen K Gafoor, and Reenu, portrayed by Mamitha Baiju. Director Girish AD is now set to work on another project with the production house.

Director   who is enjoying the success of his film Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, has confirmed that  is no longer moving forward, saying that he trusts his ”gut feeling” while deciding the sequel’s fate. In a interview with Cue Studio, the filmmaker revealed that he had several rounds of discussions with a writer, and Premalu’s co-writer Kiran Josey while trying to develop the second part. However, Girish AD said he could not convince himself that the film was headed in the right direction. He also mentioned discussing the matter with actor and filmmaker Dileesh Pothan. “I walked up to Pothan  and told him this, he said ‘you are overthinking’ but I insisted I will just leave this for now,” Girish AD said.

Earlier, Naslen K Gafoor had also confirmed that Premalu 2 was on hold because the makers were not satisfied with the script. Speaking to Club FM, he had said, “Premalu 2 has officially been cancelled. Dileesh ettan (brother) has already spoken about it. Due to certain technical reasons, the project did not reach a perfect landing. Maybe it could happen in the future. But as of now, it has been cancelled. The project was stopped because the script did not achieve the required perfection.”

Set largely in Hyderabad, the film followed Sachin as he witnesses love, friendship and his uncertain future after moving to the city. Sangeeth Prathap, Shyam Mohan and Mathew Thomas were also part of the cast.

Premalu 2 was officially announced in 2024 through Bhavana Studios’ social media page, with the team teasing the return of the popular characters and promising another romantic comedy. The sequel was initially planned for 2025, with Fahadh Faasil set to return as a producer. Expectations were particularly high because Premalu was made on a reported budget of around Rs 3 crore and went on to gross approximately Rs 136 crore worldwide.
