The 18-year-old bond between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings is now facing uncertainty. Reports of a sour relationship between the two have emerged following the failure of negotiations to acquire a stake in the franchise.
Is this historic partnership on the verge of collapse?
MS Dhoni-CSK Relationship in Trouble: The relationship between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings has been one of the most talked-about relationships in the IPL. Beginning in 2008, this partnership led to five IPL titles, and Dhoni gradually became not just the team’s captain but also the face of CSK.
But now a report has raised serious questions about this relationship. It claims that negotiations between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the franchise regarding the purchase of a stake in CSK failed to reach any conclusion. Following this, reports of a sour relationship between the two have emerged.
What happened in the 18 year old relationship?
According to the report, Dhoni, who is nearing the end of his playing career, wanted to take his association with CSK to a new level. As a result, he expressed interest in purchasing a stake in the franchise. However, the two parties could not agree on a percentage of the stake. The report also claims that no formal written proposal or agreement was made during the negotiations, and most of the discussions were conducted verbally.
Stuck at 5.5% from 25%
The most interesting part of the alleged negotiations between Dhoni and CSK is the stake figure. According to a Cricblogger report, Dhoni initially expressed a desire to acquire a 25% stake. In response, CSK reportedly offered only a 3% stake. Dhoni then lowered his demand to 20%, but the franchise’s offer only reached 4%. In the next round of negotiations, Dhoni reportedly agreed to an 18% stake, but CSK’s final offer was 5.5%.
‘Dhoni was not asking for a free share’
The report also claims, citing a source, that Dhoni didn’t want the stake for free, but was willing to pay for it. The source added, “Dhoni wanted the stake. He wasn’t asking for it for free, but the CSK management saw it differently.”

The failure of the stake deal isn’t just a matter of business negotiations falling apart. The report claims that this development has soured Dhoni’s relationship with CSK, and uncertainty about his future has increased.
Dhoni was retained by CSK for ₹4 crore before the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, due to injury, he was unable to play a single match for the team in IPL 2026. The biggest question now is whether Dhoni will be seen in the yellow jersey again next season.
Why is the relationship between CSK and Dhoni so special?
Dhoni has been with CSK since 2008 and has been the franchise’s most successful captain. Under his captaincy, CSK won the IPL title five times. He is among the team’s most capped players and the leading run-scorer for CSK. This is why the relationship between Dhoni and CSK is considered to go beyond the typical player-franchise relationship. For Chennai fans, ‘Mahi’ is not just a player, but a part of the franchise’s identity.
