Vijayta Pandit B’Day SPL: Few actors get the kind of beginning Vijayta Pandit received in Bollywood. Her very first film, Love Story, released in 1981 and turned its young leads Vijayta and Kumar Gaurav into overnight stars. The film’s songs became hugely popular, the chemistry between the newcomers clicked and Vijayta suddenly appeared to have everything required for a long career in Hindi cinema. Yet, the journey that followed looked very different from what that blockbuster debut had promised.
As Vijayta celebrates her birthday on August 25, her story remains one of Bollywood’s more intriguing what ifs particularly because the actress has, years later, linked the slowdown in her career to her relationship with Kumar Gaurav and alleged opposition from his father, veteran star Rajendra Kumar.
‘Love Story’ Made Vijayta Pandit An Overnight Star
Vijayta came from a family already deeply connected with music and cinema. Her sister Sulakshana Pandit was an actress and singer, while her brothers Jatin and Lalit would later become one of Bollywood’s most successful composer duos.
Interestingly, it was Rajendra Kumar himself who spotted Vijayta and wanted her for Love Story. Vijayta recalled in a 2021 interview that he noticed her when she had accompanied Sulakshana to a film trial. She was still studying at the time but eventually agreed to enter films and made her debut opposite Rajendra Kumar’s son Kumar Gaurav.
The gamble paid off spectacularly. Love Story became a major success and its newcomers became one of the industry’s most talked-about young pairs. But something else had happened while the film was being made.
Vijayta Pandit And Kumar Gaurav Fell In Love
Vijayta has since spoken openly about falling in love with Kumar Gaurav during the making of Love Story. According to the actress, their relationship became serious and Kumar had even spoken about marrying her. The problem, she claimed, was that Rajendra Kumar did not approve.
In later interviews, Vijayta alleged that Kumar Gaurav’s family wanted him to focus on his career and opposed their relationship. She also claimed that differences over her financial background played a part in the family’s reluctance towards the match.
Their relationship eventually ended, and Kumar Gaurav later married Namrata Dutt, daughter of Sunil Dutt and Nargis. For Vijayta, however, she has claimed the personal heartbreak was accompanied by a professional setback.
Did Her Relationship With Kumar Gaurav Affect Her Career?
This is where Vijayta’s account makes her career story especially striking. According to her, producers wanted to repeat the Love Story pairing after the film’s success. Vijayta alleged that Rajendra Kumar opposed those offers and instead encouraged filmmakers to cast other actresses opposite his son.
She has gone as far as claiming that Rajendra Kumar had her removed from films and prevented her and Kumar Gaurav from working together again. These remain Vijayta Pandit’s allegations, and there is no independent evidence establishing that Rajendra Kumar deliberately ended her career. But Vijayta has repeatedly maintained that the situation cost her opportunities at a crucial stage.
Interestingly, Vijayta had offered a less detailed explanation years earlier. Speaking in 2021, she called not signing films immediately after Love Story the “biggest regret” of her life and said the reason behind the decision was deeply personal. She added that several projects offered to her at the time would have reunited her with Kumar Gaurav. She continued acting in films including Mohabbat, Car Thief, Deewana Tere Naam Ka and Jeete Hain Shaan Se, but never recreated the sensation of her debut.
Vijayta Found Another Love Story With Aadesh Shrivastava
Things turned out differently for Vijayta as she fell in love with composer Aadesh Shrivastava. The two got married in 1990 and bore two children together. Looking back on the love story of Aadesh at a later time, Vijayta called it a better love story compared to the love story that had made her a star. In an interview on Indian Idol in 2026, she recounted their marriage and explained how much he still meant to her after his death. Aadesh passed away in 2015 due to cancer.
The singer was known to have shared that she was suffering from financial troubles because of his death, but that she had not sought help from anyone else. Almost half a century after Love Story, Vijayta Pandit’s Bollywood career is still connected with that remarkable beginning. She became a star as well as got a romance thanks to the movie but not the career many people thought would follow.
Whether things would have been different had Vijayta and Kumar Gaurav continued appearing together can never really be known. But in Vijayta’s own telling of the story, the romance that began during her biggest success also became one of the reasons her promising Bollywood run lost momentum.
