What’s A Car You’ve Secretly Wanted To Own, But Are Afraid To Admit You Want?

Car enthusiasts love a good list. They run in our head much like a well-oiled machine, at the ready for any recommendation or suggestion asked of us like  ,the   or   There’s also the list of parts we need (in physical or mental form) for whatever we’re tinkering on in the garage, as well as a list of hopeful vehicles we would like to own, someday, when the price is right or the stars and planets finally align in our favor. But deep in the darkest reaches of our minds and hearts, there’s a car on a very private list that we would never admit aloud to friends, family or fellow enthusiasts that we have wanted to own or might even consider owning.

Jalops, it’s time to get personal. I want to know what’s a car you’ve secretly wanted to own, but are afraid to admit you want.

This vehicle is when you only search for when you know you’re alone and will be alone for some time. You are desperately terrified of what would happen if any person walked in on you looking at these vehicles in any capacity. In fact, you’d rather someone walk in on you doing almost anything else. And I mean that. This car is one of your deepest and darkest secrets. Your closest people in your life know nothing of this car, and will remain in the dark even after your confession this week.

I’ll go first. Once upon a time during my first iteration of working at Jalopnik, I was loaned a new Ram 1500 Rebel to drive. My purpose in driving it was mostly to experience the wonders of UConnect to settle an ongoing dispute with my editor on good vehicle infotainment systems. I didn’t end up loving UConnect any more than I had when I owned a slightly older Stellantis product, my 2015 Fiat 500 Sport (which was, I didn’t). However, from the time the truck was finally taken away, I was left carrying a terrible secret. I really liked that truck. I even admitted to my editor, like I was in a Catholic confessional, that I might prefer to own it over say our other Detroit choices: the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado.

I won’t get into all of my nitty gritty reasons for this conversion. What has remained with me all of these years later is that this full-size pickup didn’t feel or handle like a full-size truck for someone who is 5’4″ and a buck 20 weight-wise. Sure it looked ridiculously huge from the outside and completely dwarfed me, but it was one of the most comfortable full-size trucks I had ever driven. Just no matter how much it makes sense to own, I still to this day cannot bring myself to own one…yet.

Now that my confession is permanently on the web until the internet dies or Jalopnik is deleted off the face of the planet, it’s your turn to confess. What is that car you’ve secretly wanted to own but are afraid to admit you want? Make sure to tell us why. Your “why” might not be as ludicrous sounding as the car itself is. Plus, lucky for you, your can mask your admissions behind your clever screen names and anonymous accounts. It’d be hard to trace your secrets back to you. Unless your screen name is your name. I cannot help you there.
