New Delhi: India were dealt a huge blow on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test against in Colombo as wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant had to leave the field after injuring his wrist.
Pant walked off retired hurt as he couldn’t continue batting after being hit by a delivery from Lahiru Kumara.
The incident took place in the 58th over of India’s first innings, shortly after the tea break. Pant tried a pull shot against a delivery from Kumara and failed to get the timing right as he was hit directly on his glove. The left-hander showed signs of discomfort immediately and was attended to by the physio.
The physio applied an ice pack to Pant’s injured wrist, but it was deemed that the left-hander shouldn’t continue playing. Pant walked off the pitch, retired hurt, with Ravindra Jadeja walking out to bat next. Pant was batting on 3 when he left the field injured.
The extent of Pant’s injury is not known yet, and it remains to be seen if the swashbuckling left-hander will return to bat for India in their first innings in Colombo. Pant’s injury, if serious, can be a massive blow for the visitors as he has been in fine form and struck a brilliant 66-run knock in the series opener in Galle.
