Johann Zarco announces surprise return at MotorLand Aragón after knee recovery

Johann Zarco Accelerates Recovery, Eyes Return at MotorLand Aragón After Knee Injury

Johann Zarco has stunned the paddock by announcing his unexpected comeback for the upcoming Grand Prix at MotorLand Aragón following a serious knee injury.

The LCR Honda rider defied initial medical advice, which had recommended a cautious return at the San Marino GP, revealing he now feels fit to race sooner than anticipated.

The French rider suffered a severe knee injury during the Catalan Grand Prix after a crash on the second start sent him into the first corner, triggering a collision with Luca Marini and Pecco Bagnaia. Zarco endured the worst impact as his leg became trapped beneath Bagnaia’s bike. Initially, doctors opted against surgery, preferring to reduce inflammation before assessing the damage. Zarco himself later confirmed he would not undergo operation, choosing a gradual rehabilitation path instead.

On August 7, Zarco donned his leathers to ride a production motorcycle at the Circuit of Andorra-Pas de la Casa, marking a critical milestone in his recovery. Most recently, he tested again at the Pôle Mécanique Alès Cévennes circuit in southern France, coinciding with his announcement to return at Aragón.

Reflecting on his latest test on social media, Zarco said, “It was completely different from my previous supermoto test, which offers a more comfortable riding position. This test was designed to challenge me. I’ve been training again for two months now. These were two very private days of testing. My lap times were solid. It was crucial to gauge how I felt on the bike in a race position.”

The rider from Cannes acknowledged the physical challenge of adopting the aggressive, crouched stance required on a MotoGP bike. “The body adapts quickly but doesn’t forget that hunched position. Knee discomfort was manageable. The pain really kicks in when I get small knocks, start to slide, and try to absorb the impact. Those little hits are what cause the pain.”

After two intense days on track, Zarco’s verdict on his recovery is optimistic: “The rehabilitation is going really well, and it feels incredible to be back on the track. On the CBR, especially on a tight circuit like Alès, there’s almost no chance to rest. That really helps to understand where I stand physically. I see that things are progressing quite well,” he concluded.

Zarco’s determination and rapid progress inject fresh excitement into the MotoGP scene ahead of Aragón, as fans and teams await his return to competitive action.
