Adisputed LBW decision during a cricket tournament in 1990 allegedly turned violent when a furious batsman the umpire with his bat and then fled.
Thirty-six years later, the Borivli police have finally tracked down and arrested the accused, who was living a quiet life with his family in Mira Road.
Omprakash Pasi, 55, was batting in a tournament in Borivli when the umpire dismissed him by LBW. Angered by the decision, Pasi allegedly got into an argument with the umpire and then hit him on the head with the cricket bat.
The umpire suffered serious injuries in the attack. Based on the medical report and complaint, the registered an attempt to murder case against Pasi in 1990 under Sections 307 and 34 of the IPC.
Pasi remained on the run for the next 36 years and was eventually declared. The breakthrough came when the Borivli Police Crime Prevention Squad combined conventional investigation with technical inputs. Police used the Sanchar Saathi system to trace details linked to the accused and identified a mobile number registered in his name.
The number’s location was traced to . In an interesting twist, when the officers arrived at the location, they asked a local whether he knew Omprakash Pasi, who was none other than him! They then picked him up. During questioning, he allegedly admitted his involvement in the 1990 attack. He is now in the police’s custody.
