Kuldeep Yadav Advised to Focus on Bowling Quality Over Wickets by Coach Gambhir

Colombo, August 22: The second and final  between India and  is set to take place at the Sinhalese Sports Club Stadium in Colombo this Sunday.

Ahead of the match, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized that his discussions with left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav have centered around delivering quality bowling rather than solely focusing on taking wickets.

In the first match of the series held in Galle, India secured a victory by 165 runs, but Kuldeep managed to claim only one wicket. This has led to considerable speculation about his position in the team for the second Test. India also has uncapped off-spin all-rounder Saransh Jain available, who could be included in the playing XI if the team seeks more variety.

During a press conference, Gambhir stated, “We will try to choose the best bowling attack that can help us take 20 wickets. You can score 1,000 runs in Test cricket, but there’s no guarantee you will win the match. However, if you take 20 wickets, you significantly increase your chances of winning.”

He further explained, “In my view, to win a Test match, you select the best attack that can secure 20 wickets, whether that includes three left-arm spinners, off-spinners, or three fast bowlers; all options are open to us. Ultimately, we know how good Kuldeep is as a bowler. Importantly, it sometimes depends on the captain’s judgment. If he believes that two other spinners can take wickets based on the conditions, he will decide how to utilize a particular spinner. It’s not about anyone underperforming; it’s about achieving results. For me, that’s what matters most.”

Gambhir noted, “When you play with five main bowlers, someone will inevitably bowl less. That’s the nature of Test cricket. However, this doesn’t mean that a bowler isn’t performing well; it’s about who the captain or management believes is the most dangerous in that specific situation.”

Specifically addressing Kuldeep, Gambhir mentioned, “In my discussions with Kuldeep, I have advised him to focus on delivering good spells rather than trying too hard to take wickets. Sometimes, as a wrist spinner, if you are overly eager to take wickets, it can affect your control.”

“Nonetheless, we have always considered Kuldeep to be crucial, and we know how successful and dangerous he can be in any conditions. Still, as I said, we will strive to select the attack that performs best under these circumstances.”

Gambhir emphasized the importance of maintaining strategic flexibility by playing with five bowlers on flat pitches. “If the pitch is very flat, bowlers will have to work hard, perhaps excessively so, because, as I said, to win a Test match, you need to take 20 wickets. If you bat first and score 700 runs but fail to take 20 wickets, the match will ultimately end in a draw.”

“For this reason, if the pitch is flat, we have the advantage of having five main bowlers. When you have five bowlers, you can rotate them more effectively. However, if you only play with four bowlers, they may have to work much harder. As we saw in the last Test match, even though Kuldeep didn’t bowl much, we had a fifth bowler who could step in and take wickets at any time.”

“However, if your fifth bowler is a part-timer, you won’t be able to rotate your fast bowlers as effectively, and you’ll need to bring them back quickly. In such situations, you want your fast bowlers to return when they can be effective, not just as a fallback option. So, we have that flexibility. I always say that teams with five main bowlers have a better chance of winning Test matches.”
