Carlos Alcaraz Returns After A Four-Month Layoff: What To Expect From The Spaniard At US Open?

Carlos Alcaraz will make a comeback to Tennis after a four-month hiatus due to a right wrist injury. Alcaraz picked up the injury during the Barcelona Open in April and missed the following French Open and the entire grass swing, including Wimbledon.

While he resumed training, his withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open raised concerns about whether he’d make it in time for the US Open, where he’s the defending champion.

hasn’t played any competitive match in four months, and coming back into a Grand Slam should not be easy for him.

What To Expect From Carlos Alcaraz At US Open?

Alcaraz will enter the tournament as one of the favourites to win the title. He’s been doing well at the training sessions, but it’s nowhere near the load the wrist will take during the US Open, where the conditions will be brutal, to say the least. He may find his rhythm as the tournament progresses, but how well his wrist holds up could well decide if he can defend his title.

But the optimism is high given that Alcaraz had achieved something similar in 2024. The veteran withdrew from the Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open due to a right forearm injury. He briefly returned in Madrid before again withdrawing from the Italian Open due to pain in the forearm. He entered the French Open with very little match fitness and rhythm and went on to win the Roland Garros and Wimbledon. If Alcaraz’s wrist is fully healed and ready to take the load of a Grand Slam, then he should make a deep run at the tournament and might even defend it, given that there are question marks over the fitness of and Novak Djokovic. At his age, he might run out of gas in the business end of the tournament.
